'Bed' is a song by American singer J. Holiday serving as the second single for his debut studio album, Back of My Lac'. It was released by Capitol Records as the album's second single on June 19, 2007.[1] The same artwork used for the single is also used for the Japan version for his debut album.

Chart performance[edit]

'Bed' debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in the issue week of July 4, 2007 at number 89 and has peaked at number 5.[2] It was number 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for five weeks in a row. The single has also debuted on BET's 106 & Park countdown at number 9 on Tuesday July 31, 2007. On Wednesday, August 15, 2007, 'Bed' hit number one on its 11th day on the countdown. This song was #70 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.[3] The video for 'Bed' was ranked the #11 video of 2007 on BET: Notarized.

Live performances[edit]

On August 17, 2007, Holiday gave his first televised performance of the song on BET's 106 & Park. 'Bed' was also performed on Showtime at the Apollo along with the single 'Suffocate'.

Music video[edit]

The music video for 'Bed' was directed by Jonathan Mannion. The video starts with J. Holiday in his tour bus. Not long after he goes to a motel where he is singing the first verse. There are scenes of the female that he is singing about though she is not present with him. The first verse also consists of a scene of Holiday singing on a brown wall. Eventually he packs his things and is walking down a deserted road and soon gets to an automobile store and buys a car. He drives to his girlfriend's (video model Jennifer also seen in Omarion's 'O' Video) house and she jumps up and hugs him. Night falls and as the song states he puts her to 'Bed'. The camera then shows him waking up in the morning with his girlfriend still asleep.He picks up his plane tickets and leaves in a taxi, leaving the car he bought at his girlfriend's house.

Remixes[edit]

The official remix features American rappers Ja Rule and Trina, and uses the instrumental from R. Kelly's song 'Number One', which itself samples Kirko Bangz's 'Drank In My Cup' and RUN-DMC's 'Walk This Way'. The second official remix features American rapper Fabolous. The Third Remix of this song came early 2018 when 'Kanye West' had a 'Yeezy Season 5' Fashion show in the New York City it was later released on Soundcloud for the masses to hear 17:19 minute remix rework and completely re-done song vocals are done by 'The Dream'

Usage in media[edit]

The song appears on the episode of 'Stay fierce, Malik' January 23, 2009 on The Game. Part of the song was used on the trailer of the 2019 comedy filmLittle.

Back of My Lac' is the debut studio album from American R&B singer J. Holiday that was released in the United States on October 2, 2007, by Music Line Group and Capitol Records.

The album was supported by three singles, 'Be with Me', 'Bed' and 'Suffocate'.

Upon its release, Back of My Lac' received generally mixed reviews from music critics. The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200, selling 105,000 copies in its first week. The album was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 51st Grammy Awards, but lost to Mary J. Blige's Growing Pains.

Background[edit]

Originally meant to be released by the end of 2006, however it was pushed back to early 2007 and then pushed to its final release of October 2. J. Holiday has spoken about the track and promotional single 'City Boy' featuring 8 Ball & MJG as the only collaboration on the album and the D.C. anthem, the song is featured on the album only as a bonus track in several countries. J. Holiday worked with Ne-Yo on three songs between December 2005 and January 2006 that did not make the album.

Singles[edit]

The album's lead single, 'Be with Me', was released on October 31, 2006. The song was produced by Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins. The song did not fare well commercially, failing to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since peaked at #83 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.[1]

The second single, 'Bed', was released on June 19, 2007, it peaked at number 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number one on Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs for five weeks total and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[1]

The third single, 'Suffocate' was released on October 2, 2007, the song has peaked at #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart and #18 on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] The video for the single was shot in Paris, France and debuted on BET's 106 & Park on November 7, 2007.[2]

Mark Edward Nero from About.com reviewed the album favorably, saying: 'It's rare that young artist puts out such a well-rounded album, one that young men can totally relate to and that young women will be swept off their feet by, but Back of My Lac', is just such an album. It's charming, gritty, sensual, original and most of all-real. Ladies and gentlemen, J. Holiday has arrived. And he definitely is that dude.'[4]

Fan reviews remain highly favorable for the album, praising its overall consistency and well roundness. 'Fatal', 'Bed','Thank You' and 'Suffocate' have been frequently referenced as favorites.

Commercial performance[edit]

The album debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at number 5, selling 105,000 copies in its first week.[9] It debuted at #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album debuted in the Top 20 R&B/Hip Hop albums in Canada and charted within the Top 100 albums in Canada.[citation needed] It became a Top 10 R&B/Hip Hop album in the UK and a Top 40 UK album entry peaking at #32.[citation needed] In the U.S it also made it to #8 on the Tastemakers chart and #5 on the Top Digital Albums and Billboard Comprehensive Albums Chart.
